The story behind Kittiwake at nest Lofoten I
In the historic fishing village of Å in Lofoten, a young kittiwake rests safely in its nest on an old boathouse wall. This vulnerable seabird species has experienced dramatic changes in its original oceanic habitat. Consequently, it has had to seek refuge closer to land and humans.
Research shows that rising sea temperatures push herring and capelin deeper into the dark waters or force fish shoals further north. Because kittiwakes cannot dive and must snatch food directly from the surface, they face starvation in their traditional bird cliffs. Furthermore, the presence of predators like sea eagles now causes these traditional colonies to collapse.
As a result, these clever birds have migrated into the fishing villages. Here, they use the coastal boathouses as artificial cliff ledges, providing much-needed protection and shelter from extreme weather during nesting. Through my lens, I strive to capture these intimate environmental portraits that remind us of the critical importance of preserving these fragile ecosystems.
