Colorful Mallard on Water I – Photographed in Western Norway
In Western Norway, fjords and mountains meet in dramatic harmony, and nature pulses with life. Mallards move gracefully across the reflective water, highlighting the vibrant colors that make Nordic nature unique.
The Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) is one of our largest ducks, measuring 50–60 cm in length and weighing 800–1400 g. The male’s plumage features an iridescent green head, yellow bill, white neck ring, rust-colored chest, and black tail, while the female has a brown-speckled plumage and an orange-and-black bill. Both sexes have orange feet. In flight, the blue wing mirrors with broad white edges become visible, making the species easy to recognize
During summer, mallards molt into an eclipse plumage, in which the male resembles the female, though the yellow bill still reveals its gender. The vibrant colors and contrasts of these ducks make them a fascinating subject in nature, reminding us of the importance of pristine habitats and clean waters to protect wildlife.
